A Backpack should weigh in at no more than 15{e6c4e4d09cbfcb70eba5dc435d44d7cb2d0e378527800a29222f16d6eea92ea1} of a child’s body weight! So your 80-lb. kid’s pack shouldn’t be more than 12 lbs.! We adults shouldn’t carry more than 20{e6c4e4d09cbfcb70eba5dc435d44d7cb2d0e378527800a29222f16d6eea92ea1} of our weight either.
Pack the heaviest items at the bottom and back of the pack, lightest stuff on top and in front.
This minimizes backpack sway and reduces stress on the back.
Look for padded straps and padded backs to keep books from diging into your child’s spine and shoulder blades. Remember to use BOTH straps!
Use both shoulder straps. Look for a backpack with a waist strap and/or a chest strap to more securely hold the load.
Does your kid look like he/she is struggling to lug a load? Take a look and be sure that he/she needs everything inside.
Don’t create a trip hazard by leaving it in the hallway or on the steps.
